Know how to shop right

January 15th, 2008 by Igor Pankov

The Xmas holidays attract online shoppers who are busy snapping presents and buying stuff with discounts. This is all good; it’s very convenient and cool to shop in the comfort of your home. However, as every online activity, buying online is fraught with risk. Below are simple guidelines to follow to minimize this risk.

First and foremost, buy from credible organizations, the companies you know and trust. Do not respond to mega-deal offerings promoted in spammed messages, and also do not follow the links provided in authentic-looking ads as those might be fake and constitute a threat. Manually enter the merchants’ logical URL or conduct a web search for the official manufacturer’s site of your coveted merchandise.

Use modern browser such as Firefox, Opera or Internet Explorer v7, with all security patches and fixes applied. When visiting a site and before entering your login details or financial information there, make sure the site contents is encrypted and its identity certified by appropriate certification authority. Safe shopping!
