Password integrity

December 10th, 2007 by Igor Pankov

Use strong passwords and pass-phrases for your login accounts, WiFi encryption and other identifiable entries. Simple passwords can be cracked in a matter of days, if not hours by brute-force password generators. Avoid using the same passwords for different accounts, because if one password gets into the wrong hands it will automatically unlock access to the other accounts that share it.

As it’s impossible to remember all passwords you ever created, use password repository software that stores all your passwords in encrypted format, so you can easily pick up the required entry from a list and enter it where needed, without exposing it. Of course, do not store your physical passwords in unprotected location, such as on the office stationary close to the workplace. A number of online password generators will simplify the task of creating a strong password.

It always amazes me when Im at work, so many users call in because they cant remember their passwords from when they used them last. They have forgotten them over the weekend!
And they gripe so because we make them use at least 6 letters and at least 4 numbers!
Yet when we inform them of a successful attack being thwarted and their data being saved, they just get that vacant stare.
    Weird.
